Angry Houseguest Prompts North Side Hostage Standoff

Police have closed several streets near Metropolitan Methodist Hospital just north of downtown due to a police standoff, the second standoff between an armed person and officers in 18 hours, 1200 WOAI news reports.

McCullough is closed near Ogden and Evergreen Streets.

Today's standoff is now being described as a 'hostage situation.'

Police Officer Roger Zuniga says a 53 year old man who had been staying with the residents of an apartment in the 200 block of East Evergreen became belligerent and began attacking the residentsPo.

"He produced a rifle, was making threats, and the suspect is refusing to leave and is threatening to shoot anybody who comes by," Zuniga said.

Nobody has been hurt.  Zuniga said the apartment resident is in the apartment with the suspect, who Zuniga described as 'abusive and bullying.'

"One of the residents who lives there is in the house with him, the other one did get out," Zuniga said.  Police say the man still in the apartment, aged 18, is considered a hostage.

Wednesday afternoon, police shot and killed a man following a standoff on the northwest side.

Zuniga says 'drug use' is believed to be involved in today's incident.
