Eagle Ford Making it Difficult for Local School Districts to Hire Bus Drivers

Area school districts are desperate for bus drivers, and they say the booming Eagle Ford shale oil field is to blame.

The Northside ISD today held a job fair to try to hire bus drivers, and Charles Rentschler, who is in charge of the district's bus fleet, says it is proving to be a challenge.

"Other school districts are suffering like we are as far as bus drivers and the need for them," he said.

He says the energy companies are throwing big bucks at anybody who has a commercial drivers license.

"Whether the Eagle Ford has something to do with it or not, it has been difficult this year to find qualified drivers," he said.

The Northside district pays $11 an hour to starting bus drivers, which is lower than what they make in the oil fields.
