Not even a government shutdown can stop the San Antonio metro area's booming retail climate, 1200 WOAI news reports.
The State comptroller's Office says, despite thousands of local federal employees being furloughed for two weeks, October sales tax receipts, which is the best measure of retail sales, were up 14% in October over October of 2012.
That is double the statewide retail sales increase of about 7%.
Comal County's increase was even stronger, up 17% from October of last year.
That kind of growth is unusual, even in Texas. Dallas County reported a 7% increase in retail sales in October, and the increase in Harris County was just under 4%.
The figures indicate a merry Christmas season for local retailers.
