An Airman who hails from the Rio Grande Valley will be remembered for generations for his exceptional bravery and heroism, 1200 WOAI's Michael Board reports.
The Silver Star is the third highest decoration for valor in the U.S. Armed Forces, and now Tech Sergeant Ismail Villegas is the only living Airman to receive the award twice.
He received his second Silver Star at Lackland Air Force Base on Monday. The citation describes how he risked his life by charging into a firefight to save a fellow warrior.
"We go towards the fight so hopefully no one will have to go at it," he said.
"I didn't really have a lot of time to think, I just heard him yell, and I just reacted, and we're trained to administer first aid, and suppress the enemy, in order to get them out of the kill zone.
Villegas received the Silver Star along with USAF Staff Sergeant Dale Young. He led his team to victory in a 96 hour long firefight against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Two true American heroes, and we salute them for their service and for their exceptional dedication to their duty, their comrades, and their country.
