UT Conservative Group Scraps Controversial Illegal Immigrant Stunt

The Young Conservatives of Texas today cancelled a controversial stunt on the University of Texas at Austin set for tomorrow, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The YCT had announced ‘Catch an Illegal Immigrant.’  Students who were wearing signs reading ‘illegal immigrant’ were to be ‘captured’ and brought to the YCT desk on campus, and the ‘capturing’ student would receive a $25 gift card.

“I acknowledge that the decision to include $25 gift cards during the event was misguided and that the idea for the event was intentionally over the top,” YCT Chairman Lorenzo Garcia said.

The YCT is known for staging provocative stunts on the campus of the predominately liberal university.  It’s best know for its ‘affirmative action bake sale,’ where cookies are sold at lower prices to African Americans and Latinos, in an effort to publicize what the group feels is the inequities of affirmative action.

The illegal immigrant game was roundly criticized not just by liberals and immigrant rights groups, but by the YCT’s fellow conservatives.

“The catch an illegal immigrant game is in very bad taste and doesn’t reflect conservative values,” said Bob Quasius, who heads a group called Cafe Con Leche, which says its goal is to make the GOP more attractive to Hispanics and immigrants.

The UT system Chancellor, Francisco Cigarroa, and the President of UT Austin, Bill Powers, both condemned the stunt, with Powers saying that anybody participating in it would be in violation of the University Honor Code.

Garcia said he cancelled the event ‘after speaking with my members,’ and he decried what he called the ‘uproar’ over the event’s premise.

“Opponents of YCT have claimed that I am being used as a front man,” he said.  “I have been called an Uncle Tom.  I have received emails and comments via social media filled with obscenity.  The reactions of some who claim that YCT is creating a demeaning or degrading environment on campus have been truly disgraceful.”
